Understanding the Different Types of Residential Safes
Before choosing, it helps to know what each safe is built to defend against. Safes have specific ratings and types of jobs to do whether that is protecting from intense fires or skilled burglary attacks. A safe cannot protect your items from floods.
Fire Safes
Fire is one of Southwest Florida’s most underestimated risks. Between lightning strikes, lithium battery mishaps, electrical failures, car fires, and brush fires, fire protection may be the most important to consider.
Look for UL and ETL fire ratings. These independent and scientific lab tests measure internal temperatures under extreme heat. Basic fire-rated safes give around 30–45 minutes of protection while the top-performing models can last up to 2.5 hours at 1,100 degrees.
Fire protection is especially important the farther your home is from a fire station. In Golden Gate Estates, for instance, longer response times mean you want the highest fire rating your budget allows.
Burglary Safes
When your priority is stopping theft of valuable items, burglary ratings matter. These safes are built to withstand pry bars, drills, and strikes from common break-in tools. Safes from the big-box stores may claim to be “burglary-proof”, but no safe can live up to this false and deceptive marketing claim. Safes are independently graded by UL Laboratories for burglary resistance. The safes are attacked by skilled safecrackers in a lab, then receive a grade based on the level of difficulty.
Ratings generally fall into:
- Good – UL RSC Rating – A Residential Security Container is tested in a lab and certified to withstand a vigorous 5 minutes attack using of a variety of common burglary tools.
- Better – B-Rating and C-Rating – With thicker steel and a more solid construction, a B or C rated safe can provide good protection when combined with other features including a glass relocker, and a quality lock. These safes are not torture tested by UL, but do offer upgraded protection from basic big box store safes.
- Best – UL TL-Rating – These safes are the fortress tier and built to resist the toughest professional-level attacks over longer periods of time. Serious collectors, jewelry stores, museums, high net worth homeowners, and pawn shops will use TL-Safes to protect collections well over $100,000 in value. A TL-30×6 safe is the most secure rating on the market.
One of our most memorable burglary stories? A Liberty Presidential safe we installed for a Naples client. While the homeowners were at work, burglars attacked the safe for nearly four hours. They drilled it. They pried it. They beat on it. Used power tools. The safe won and the burglars were so upset they left with nothing and left all their tools behind!
Several manufacturers we carry will even replace your safe for free after a burglary or fire. The brand you choose matters tremendously when shopping for a safe.
Jewelry and Luxury Safes
Naples loves its sparkle. And for good reason. Dedicated jewelry safes keep your pieces protected and organized—a big deal for anyone who’s dug through a tangled drawer before heading to dinner on Fifth.
At Key Breeze, popular choices include:
- Brown Safe for fabulous custom luxury safe builds
- Liberty Premium safes with jewelry configurations
- AMSEC and Gardall jewelry safes, including our top-selling tall white AMSEC jewelry safe that’s practically made for Naples closets
The Key Breeze collection of curated jewelry safes offers luxury upgrades including quilted leather or leatherette interiors, elegant suede drawers, LED motion-sense lighting, and watch winders.
Large Gun Safes & Pistol Vaults
Many customers who don’t own firearms often choose gun safes because the interior space is fantastic. Large safes offer flexible layouts with adjustable shelving, room for jewelry trays or drawers, and the ability to access your items without kneeling.
If you do own firearms, a proper gun safe is essential. For smaller spaces or smaller budgets, our collection of fast-access pistol vaults offer a compact, secure alternative.
Condo & High-Rise Friendly Safes
If you’re looking to add a safe to your Naples or Marco Island condo, you’ll have a few unique considerations before purchasing a safe. While many high-rises allow bolting, it requires expert planning and a professional team of installers.
Our team has bolted down thousands of safes in condos and we routinely:
- Review the condo association’s building rules
- Coordinate with management
- Account for weight limits and elevator capacity
- Review plans to avoid drilling into anything structural in the floor
If you’re in any of the condo buildings along the Gulf Coast of Naples, Marco Island, Bonita, or Fort Myers, we’ve likely installed safes there before.
In-Wall & In-Floor Safes
These save space, but Florida’s humidity and construction style mean they’re not always ideal. Floor safes in particular can attract moisture and are not very functional requiring you to get on the floor to open them. Wall safes are better for light valuables, medications, or documents. Floor safes are usually installed during the construction process, while wall safes can be installed during or after construction between studs.
